The focus must always be on the use of natural resources. On the one hand, it is important to pursue the reduction of the quantity used. Reusable solutions and the minimized use of materials are examples of approaches to sustainable packaging that have been known for many years. But newer approaches such as the use of bio-based materials or recycled materials – and in this context also the complex field of “design for recycling” – are playing an increasingly important role in reducing the quantities of packaging materials used.

Secondly, the development of truly sustainable packaging requires a change in the way natural resources are used. First and foremost, sustainable material procurement must be addressed. But the holistic (re)design of packaging to make it more optimally suited to more environmentally compatible use must also be considered. The focus here is on clear communication of the newly generated sustainability via various elements of the packaging graphics – from the brand roof to the attention-grabbing disruptor.
